Transitioning from a military career to education has been an incredible journey, and I'm grateful for every step. My time as a basic training commander instilled in me a deep understanding of transformational teaching methods, which I've carried into my role as an Educational Leader. It's all about empowering individuals to reach their fullest potential, whether becoming soldiers or scholars.
Thank you, Mike Sullivan, for the opportunity to share my journey on the Born To Shine podcast!

"Born To Shine - Podcast Guest - Dr. Kim Moore - Superintendent - shares her love for 'teaching'" features Dr. Kim Moore discussing her unconventional journey to becoming a school superintendent after a successful military career.
Dr. Moore describes her transition from a military officer specializing in chemical warfare to the educational sector. Her experiences in the military, particularly as a basic training commander, where she transformed civilians into soldiers, profoundly influenced her teaching philosophy. In the military, training equated to teaching, providing her with a unique perspective on education. Upon retiring, she shifted to education, starting as a science teacher and advancing through various educational roles before becoming the superintendent of Richland School District 2 in Columbia, South Carolina.
In this segment of the video, Dr. Kim Moore continues to elaborate on her journey to becoming a school superintendent. She emphasizes that although her path was not traditional, it was driven by a passion for teaching, which she considers a gift from God. Dr. Moore discusses the uniqueness of her journey, starting in the military and transitioning through roles such as training at the Pentagon before entering the education sector. This experience provided her with unique insights and skills beneficial for her later educational roles.
Dr. Moore also shares personal challenges, particularly during her youth. She recounts her experiences growing up with the struggles of her family's divorce and the economic hardships that followed. These challenges forced her to take on adult responsibilities early on, such as managing household finances as a young teenager, which led to anxiety and a strong sense of responsibility. She reflects on how these experiences shaped her understanding of the struggles students face today, particularly those thrust into adult roles prematurely. Dr. Moore discusses the importance of acknowledging and addressing mental health issues openly, highlighting changes in societal attitudes towards mental health compared to when she was younger.
In this continuation of Dr. Kim Moore's discussion, she addresses the cultural shifts regarding mental health awareness. Dr. Moore reminisces about her own childhood experiences, noting that while her family members did what they could, discussions about mental health were not common. She stresses the importance of speaking openly about mental health challenges today, encouraging young people to seek trustworthy adults for support, which contrasts with the previous tendency to avoid discussing such issues.
Dr. Moore elaborates on the mental health initiatives within her school district, which is comprised of 40 schools and centers serving almost 29,000 students. She highlights the importance of teachers recognizing changes in student behavior and the availability of spaces within classrooms where students can calm themselves or spend quiet time. The district has incorporated mental health support into their daily routines and offers family counseling to address issues that extend beyond the students to their families. Additionally, Dr. Moore's district has partnered with Care Solus, an organization that facilitates timely connections between families and mental health providers, overcoming common obstacles such as long wait times and insurance issues.
The discussion concludes with Dr. Moore expressing a need for more comprehensive mental health services both within schools and in the broader community to better support students and their families.
