A school is more than just a place of learning; it’s a community where students should feel safe, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential. While teachers and administrators play critical roles in shaping this environment, the often unsung heroes, classified staff members, are instrumental in enhancing school climate and ensuring student safety.
A student’s day begins when the student gets on the bus. As a new Assistant Principal, I was responsible for buses. I was blessed to work with the best drivers in the District. When our buses arrived, I would watch most students depart the bus smiling as they said goodbye to their driver.
Why were the sleepy teenagers grateful to their drivers? Because our bus drivers worked hard to create a safe and caring environment on the bus. While students want to be comfortable, they must also be safe. In addition to following all traffic rules, our drivers greeted the students with a smile and modeled our school expectations. As a result, students arrived at school mentally prepared to engage in learning.
From security personnel to bus drivers, their contributions are pivotal in creating a secure, positive, and inclusive atmosphere. This discussion delves into the vital role classified staff members play in shaping a school’s climate.
Classified staff members are the guardians of safety on school grounds. Their presence and dedication ensure that every student’s physical and emotional well-being is a top priority. Two key roles stand out in this regard:

In an ever-changing world, maintaining a secure campus environment is of paramount importance. Security personnel work diligently to ensure that students, staff, and facilities are safe from threats. Their vigilance, training, and quick response capabilities contribute significantly to creating an atmosphere of safety, allowing students to focus on their education without unnecessary worries.
2. Transportation Staff: Safe Journeys to Learning
Bus drivers and transportation staff are the unsung heroes who ensure safe journeys for students who commute to school. These dedicated individuals provide peace of mind to parents and guardians by ensuring that students are transported to and from school safely and punctually. Their attention to road safety and their rapport with students create a reassuring environment beyond the school gates.
A positive school climate is the bedrock upon which student growth and development flourish. Classified staff members actively contribute to this climate through their actions and presence:
